  • As a college mentor teacher in a community college child development center, this class gave me research based on information regarding the benefits of signing with children that I can share with my college students, colleagues, parents, and community members that ask about my classroom practices with young children. Some of the benefits that I have learned thus far have been: how signing helps develop both the right side and the left side of the brain allowing children to make the most use of their brain and how it creates a bond between parents and children by cutting back on frustration from both parties, allowing for better, effective and fun communication.

I have previously taken American Sign Language (ASL) classes. This is my first class where the sign language taught was tailored for use in the classroom. The material covered in this course can be adapted to meet the needs of different students.

  • SignShine's Signing for Educators is an amazing class. I am both a teacher and a mother.I was able to take away so many things from this class that I can use both in my classroom and in my home.I cannot believe the benefits of signing. I didn't realize now many "doors" this can open for young children (and adults as well). The communication that can be opened up by this tool is amazing.I truly believe that using this tool and incorporating it into classroom (and homes) children will flourish faster and with more confidence.I really like how hands on the approach were. Being able to get up and practice while learning really helped me understand and see the benefits.I think using signing in the classroom will cut down on discipline issues in the classroom. You can use these tools as helpers in routines. Students will be able to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns in a healthy, safe way.I am definitely planning on signing with my children at home on a daily basis and brining some of it into the classroom as well.Thank you so much for this workshop!
